Somehow the second sequel to Frankenstein (if you ignore the strange continuity errors between it and the preceeding one) was better than the first two movies. The plot was improved and the characters were more rounded. For some reason, Frankenstein manor became Frankenstein castle in "Bride" and it is some surrealistic castle in "Son." Also Dr. Frankenstein's lab, isolated in the first two movies, is on the family property and intact in "Son," even though it was destroyed in "Bride."
When handled as its own film, it works admirably. Boris Karloff returns as the monster again and is joined by Basil Rathbone as Frankenstein's son, and Bela Lugosi (famous for Dracula) as a vagrant who controls the monster. The plot is clever and even has a bit of a twist with Lugosi's character. I liked this one far better than its predecessors.
