KIM rating: 7.4.9Written by the movie's director and one of the stars based on some of her life experiences, Thirteen is a disturbing film showing the worst path a young person can take as she is manipulated by the most popular girl in school, and the agony of her mother watching her daughter fall apart before her eyes before she knows what happened. The popularity card is always a hot button, and it started there and ran with the story. R rating aside, even if this movie were PG, it is more of a parental movie than a teenager movie. Although the movie is about a teen on the surface, the real plot concerns the relationship between the girl and her mother. I doubt the young co-writer had much to do with this rather deep high concept. I went into this film with low expectations and was shocked at how good it really was. It is still disturbing, especially wondering and watching just how far down the rabbit hole this girl will venture before she hits the bottom and has to climb out. Before we could hit the best ending, the girl and the mother both had to grow. Great film.
