When it comes to episode 1x01...after reading it again, I thought it was interesting, but a little pedantic. There's a lot of really, really long speeches in it that could probably be cut down somewhat, but when they occur, they fit in with everything else.
One must always remember that things that are presented may come up late in future episodes, and that is likely a solid reason why stuff is here.
